R: It really was! Well done! To be honest, I didn’t think you were going to win at first.
B: No, you played very well. Anyway, you go and have a shower and change and I’ll see you outside in a few minutes.
Dialogue В
A: Excuse me – I’d like some information about tours of the city.

Speaker В
I’m a huge fan of the digital music revolution. I love being able to download any song I want and listen to it on a device that fits in my pocket. There’s no end to what kind of music you can get in this format, because it seems like nearly every tune ever made has been put into this computerised form. I also like the fact that you can buy just one song, and not an entire album. That’s less expensive, in my opinion.
Speaker С
I think music’s changed quite a lot since my parents’ day. Nowadays, I think there’s a lot of electronic instruments in use, and that’s kind of disappointing. I’ve listened to a few of my mums old records, and I like the real guitars and drums without the electronic sound. I like the real voices too, not ones that have been changed digitally. I think there’s quite a lot of real music out there these days, but there’s also lots of competition from pop bands and so on.
Speaker D
I’ve been playing in a band for a couple of years now. I can’t say I’m ready to quit my job to become a full-time musician, but I think my band mates and I have got a good thing going on. We’ve almost got enough music to put an album together, and then we’re going to try and save up enough money to record it. It’s expensive, being a musician, but if we make it big, money won’t be a problem any more.
Speaker E
I think record shops will become a thing of the past. I realise it’s much more convenient to buy digital music, and I’m not against that. But I miss hanging out in a record shop, looking at all the album covers, running into people you know who love music also. It was a social thing. Sure, there are still some record shops around, but I imagine they’re having a tough time. I feel sorry for them!

Denise: How’s it going, Greg? I heard about your football match last Saturday. What happened?
Greg: Hi, Denise. Yeah, it wasn’t such a great game. It was freezing cold and I wasn’t really in the mood to play.
Denise: Yeah, I thought that might have something to do with it.
Greg: Well, really, I think we just weren’t prepared. Some guys had missed practice a few times.
Denise: Don’t worry, there are plenty of other matches coming up. Speaking of football, I’m going with some friends to a Carlton United match on Sunday. Would you like to come?
Greg: That would be great! Actually, my team-mates were talking about going, but they weren’t sure if they could make it.
Denise: Oh really? Because of football practice?
Greg: No, I think some of them have other plans that they’d like to get out of I told them I’d like to go with them if they went, but I don’t think they’d mind if I went with you.
Denise: Well, were definitely going. We’ve already bought tickets.
Denise: Actually, one of my friends can’t go. You could have his ticket if you like.
Greg: Oh, I see. Sure! I can pay him for it. How will you get to the game?
Denise: We’re taking two cars. My sister can take us in her car, and my dad will take my other friends in his car. Its Harry and Paula that are going.
Greg: Oh, great! Paula’s in my History class. I don’t know Harry so well, actually, but he seems nice.
Denise: OK, so were leaving at 2 on Sunday. That gives us enough time to get there. I hope that’s not too early for you.
Greg: No, not at all. I can get my mum to drop me off at your house, actually.
Denise: There’s no need for that. Well come and get you.
Greg: Are you sure? I don’t mind at all.
Denise: No, no. Actually, I think your house is on the way out of town, isn’t it?
Greg: No, it’s on the other side of the school.

1. The inhabitants of Bath
2. Tourism in Bath
3. Bath’s architecture
4. Climate in Bath
5. Location in the UK
6. The geography of Bath
7. Culture and the arts
8. Bath’s ancient history
A
Bath is a world famous city known for its thermal baths, which are a major tourist attraction. The city is situated in the southwest of England, near the country’s west coast and about 150 kilometres from London. Bath is in the area of England that is known as Somerset, a county bordered on the north by the Bristol Channel.
B
The baths for which Bath is known were built around the year 60. It was the Romans who established the city as a spa. They did so about 20 years after they arrived in England. They constructed the baths, along with a temple, on a hillside near hot springs. Over the next 300 years, structures would be added to the baths, making them grander.
C
Over the years, Bath slowly became an important city. Wealthy people began moving there in the 1500s. In 1767, construction began on the Royal Crescent, a group of buildings that form a semicircle and look out onto a park. The buildings were constructed in the Georgian style. Afterward, more buildings were built in the same style, giving Bath the character it has today.
D
Bath is situated in the Avon Valley. The city is built on and surrounded by hills, which have a maximum height of 238 metres. The valley, which is about 18 metres above sea level, runs through the city centre. Ihe River Avon runs through this area, and because it is a low-lying area, the city sometimes suffers from floods during rainy seasons.
E
Presently, there are just over 80,000 people living in the city itself. The greater region of Bath, which includes nearby parts of Somerset, has a total population of around 160,000. The majority of people living in Bath are of English birth, with just under 3% of people being from places outside the UK. A resident of Bath is known as a Bathonian.
F
As it is located in the southwest of England, Bath generally has winters that are warmer than other parts of the country. Its summers are usually cool and rainy, and the temperature doesn’t go much over 20°Celsius. Average rainfall is 700 millimetres, which is spread out evenly throughout the seasons. Its windiest period is in the winter, while summers tend to have light breezes.
G
The city of Bath has five theatres, and performances are put on by both national and international companies. There are also important concerts that take place in Bath, as well as literature and film festivals. One such festival decides who in Bath is that years greatest poet, singer or storyteller. These various events attract thousands of people to the city.

In the autumn of 1900, a team of Greek sponge divers were returning from the coast of Africa. A dangerous storm started, which forced them to take shelter near the small Greek island of Antikythera. While the crew waited for the storm to pass, the captain of the boat sent one of his divers to search the seabed for sponges.
The diver, Elias Stadiatis, discovered the remains of a 2,000-year-old shipwreck at the bottom of the sea, 60 metres below. When he returned to the surface, he was so excited about what he’d found that the captain thought he had been affected by too much carbon dioxide. But when the captain himself went down to take a look, he saw that his crewman really had found ancient treasures. He immediately told the Greek authorities, and the sponge divers, with the assistance of the Greek navy, began to recover the wonderful things.
In the following months, using only very basic diving equipment, the divers managed to bring to the surface an amazing number of ancient artefacts, including bronze and marble statues, delicate glassware and gold jewellery. All of this had remained undisturbed for nearly two thousand years. The operation only stopped because conditions became too dangerous to continue.
One of the items that was discovered was a piece of bronze. It was in such poor condition that no one was sure what it was. One archaeologist suggested that it was some kind of clockwork mechanism, but no one believed him and it was put away for storage in a museum. It was nearly fifty years before anyone else took any interest in the item.
In 1951, a British scientist called Derek Price began to investigate the item. He discovered that it contained a complex gear mechanism and suggested that it was used to make calculations about the position of planets. It is regarded as the world’s first example of an analog computer. Today, it is world famous, and is known as ‘the Antikythera mechanism’. Before the discovery of this mechanism, it was believed that no complex clockwork machines had been invented until the 14th century. Scientists continue to investigate just how it was used.
The site of the shipwreck continues to fascinate modern archaeologists, who are keen to make further diving expeditions in the area. But diving in dangerous waters at depths of between sixty and seventy metres is expensive and difficult, so there have been only a few expeditions over the last hundred years or so. If it’s difficult now, just think how much harder it was for a team of Greek divers over a hundred years ago.

Test 1
Взаимоотношения с друзьями и в школе
Раздел 2 (задания по чтению)
- Variety helps socializing
- The Net socializing
- Negative socializing
- Fears of loneliness
- Socializing dominates education
- Eager to socialize
- Family socializing
- Kids need more socializing
А. Most students that don’t have any friends at school get depressed or something because they feel lonely, down, and that nobody wants to talk to them. They also might get those phobia things, like for instance, being insecure when talking to someone, or people, for one of the “first” times. So therefore, when a teacher calls them, they might feel uncomfortable with answering. They also might have stuff going through their heads and can’t focus on a test, worksheet, or whatever class assignment.
В. In many instances, the failure to socialize may be a key factor in qualifying for special education. It is one of the triad of feature for a diagnosis of autism, for example. Special education has a very strong emphasis on inclusion, which in significant part provides for increased social interaction. Learning how to get by in society is an absolutely key component to education, irrespective of whether it is the subject of a performance test.
С. In order to get through school properly you need to be able to socialize. It is especially important for little children. That’s why in my early childhood education course we are learning that developing ways of having healthy social interactions is so important for children.
D. Various societies have varied socializing skills among their members. It does not mean that one culture is superior to others. It just depends on the way that the civilization under study has progressed. A civilization which has cultivated its young generation with a common set of rules and a uniform educational system is more likely to be at harmony. But on the other hand in the United States of America each minor community brings its culture, its ethnicity and their customs. Having so many socializing influences makes the society more tolerant.
E. My boyfriend used to go out clubbing all the time. But I’m an introvert and I can’t stand that way of easy living. I told him how it made me feel but he says he wants to start going out more, he says socializing is part of his path in life. I asked him what it would be like if we had our own place, he said he would be working all day and then out socializing every night except for the weekends, then he would spend it with me, this is what he would be like if we lived together.
F. Every time I use Myspace, Facebook or Bebo, I have a chance to socialize. I use these websites to talk to old friends and make new friends, but the thing is I never ever get that chance to meet a friend, it would be cool to try that, but I don’t know what socializing websites guarantee that, I would like a safe teen site, where I can meet and make cool mates.
G. There are two types of socializing, depending on the nature of factors that influence them. One is positive when a person learns through good and happy experiences. Parents teaching their kids from their experiences, learning from books or from peers are some example of positive socializing. Positive socializing can take on the form of natural socializing and planned socializing.

I have a problem socializing with girls
I try to follow the rule ‘treat others the way you want to be treated’. But the thing I’ve realized is that a lot less seems to bother me than bothers girls. If a girl told me something like ‘I really like you but you’re in a dead end job and I am accustomed to a more expensive lifestyle therefore I wouldn’t compromise.’ I would just say okay.
I don’t know, but the way I am, I prefer if people tell me the truth like that so at least I know what’s wrong and maybe I can do better next time. However with girls I noticed telling the truth gets me hated. Girls call me rude and everything. I started lying to girls in college recently and I managed to get back relations pretty easily so I can imagine why lots of guys do it.
The interesting thing is the girls seem to suspect that I’m lying but they still smile and go along with it anyway. Telling girls what they want to hear gets me much further than I used to get. I always had difficulty lying to people because of my morals but these results are astonishing. Women always shun me for telling the cold hard truth so I didn’t know what to do. So I just started doing what got results.

While scrawling graffiti is seen as a crime in the UK, yet in the US it has become a recognized art form.
Just a few weeks ago eight graffiti gang members were convicted of causing £5,000 worth of damage on the London Underground. They are among more than 70 hard-core graffiti artists thought to be operating in London today. Most are aged under 20.
Graffiti artists, or ‘graffers’, operate in many British towns. They often work at night, covering walls, trains and railway stations with brightly painted murals or scrawls in spray paint and marker pen.
Some people regard graffiti as a form of vandalism and a menace. London Underground says that railusers find it ugly and offensive. It spends £2m a year dealing with graffiti, and has even introduced trains with graffiti-resistant paint. “We don’t think it’s artistic or creative – it’s vandalism. It’s a huge nuisance to our customers, and it’s ugly and offensive,” says Serena Holley, a spokeswoman for the London Underground. “It creates a sense of anarchy and chaos,” says Richard Mandel, a barrister who prosecuted the graffiti gang. “Passengers feel as if the whole rail system is out of control.”
British Transport Police has a graffiti unit designed to catch graffers in the act. It spent five months tracking down the recently prosecuted gang.
Graffiti art can also be a dangerous pastime. The London Underground says that some teenagers have died in accidents during nocturnal graffiti ‘raids’.
However, others say that graffiti at its best is an art form. Art galleries in London and New York have exhibited work by increasingly famous graffiti artists. “Of course graffiti is art.
There’s no question about that,” says David Grob, director of the Grob Gallery in London. Even some of those who think graffiti is wrong admit that graffers are talented. “It’s just that their artistic talent is channeled in the wrong direction,” says Barry Kogan, a barrister who represented Declan Rooney, one of the gang members.
There is a difference between ‘good graffiti’ and vandalism, says Dean Colman, a 24-year-old graffiti artist. “I’d never spray private property, like someone’s house. Some graffiti are disgusting. There’s a big difference between that and graffiti which can brighten up grey walls.”
Dean makes a living as a graffiti artist. His days of illegal spraying are behind him, he says. He has worked on a television programme about graffiti, designed a series of government posters, and decorated nightclubs. He has exhibited his work at Battersea Arts Centre in London, and he has taught graffiti-spraying in youth clubs.
Dean sees himself as an artist, and thinks that graffiti art does not get due recognition. “There’s no graffiti art in the Tate Gallery and there should be,” he says. “Graffiti is a valid as any other art form.”

Speaker A. when I have free time I don’t like staying at home. I enjoy visiting different interesting places and learn new things about history, art, science or whatever. Excursions are popular cause they are more convenient and pleasant way of getting information. A qualified guide can tell you lots of amazing things you would never find out on your own.Speaker B. I’m not an art lover and I prefer picnics to museums and excursions. However on Saturday we had a very nice trip to a nearby town. I didn’t know there are so many historical buildings. We went there by bus and on the way the guide gave us some amazing facts and legends about the town. Then we visited the central historical museum.
Speaker C. when our teacher announces us some excursions or museums I try to escape it. I don’t like museums. Probably because my mum is a tour guide. When I was little she took me to museums a lot. I was too little for the fine art or historical artifacts. I wanted to play, not to admire the exhibits. And I was afraid of the museum keepers that always hushed me.
Speaker D. this museum was opened only 2 years ago. Our students and teachers find it very amusing. It’s a museum of mistakes. We collect the funny mistakes that our students do in their essays. Usually teachers or students themselves brings us the pages and ask us to display them. Most of the exhibits are anonymous but some of the authors want their names to be written beside their mistake.
Speaker E. I enjoy visiting different museums but the problem is that there is no museums in our little town. I’m not the only person who lives in a new place. I suggest we arrange a global internet base museum. All the existence museums would make virtual expositions and everyone should have access to whatever museum they want to and can order the virtual excursions for themselves.
